WHAT'S NEW
Lit de Berger, Loire Valley
On view 369 Bleecker Street
In our most recent container, Isabelle has brought us a most wonderful gift: two Louis XV Lits de Bergers from the Loire Valley. These beds were used by the shepherds of royal flocks and the flocks bred at the famous Rambouillet. While we may associate the life of a shepherd as transient, these shepherds of the flocks of castles would stay closer to home, often sleeping in the barn near the sheep on such beds as these. The design of the bed with its high head and footboard, wrapping wings, and complete upholstery kept the wind at bay on gusty nights while maintaining the style and elegance indicative of a wealthy family.
Our two pieces are from the late 18th century, of painted beech, and are similar to two beds now in the Chateau Azay le Rideau in France. Please click here to view.
